How to Tell if You Need Dentures
Unfortunately, with age, teeth become damaged and can’t always be repaired. The good thing is — they can be replaced! When plaque and bacteria find ways to eat away at our teeth and gums, dentures offer a solution for missing teeth and damaged gums. They can give you back your ability to eat, smile, talk, and do everything as you would with natural teeth. Since teeth decay or break down over time, dentures not only replace your teeth, but they can enhance your smile and face structure. It’s also possible that you could only need partial dentures, which replace missing teeth as opposed to a full set. With a consultation, we can offer you a proper recommendation.
The Process of Getting Dentures and Partials
We will first take a mold of your natural teeth and gums to create a perfect fit for dentures or partials, respectively. It’s important that we get the best fit in one mold.
After the mold is taken, your teeth will be extracted. Our dentist will provide you with instructions after the extraction so that you can feel comfortable and free of pain throughout the healing process. We will also discuss the shade, size, and shape of teeth you desire.
Next is the fitting process. Your initial set may need some adjustments. We will make all the necessary changes so you feel completely comfortable. More than likely you’ll need future adjustments as well. Dentures are designed to last up to 10 years if you take good care of them.
How to Care for Your Dentures and Partials
We will provide you with proper instructions on how to clean and store your dentures or denture partials. You’ll want to follow these instructions consistently so that you don’t experience any trouble. However, our office is happy to provide you with assistance if something does go wrong.
You’ll want to brush them each day to remove food and plaque, just as you would natural teeth. There are brushes designed to specifically clean dentures because they have bristles that fit the shape of the denture. You can also use a toothbrush with soft bristles. Most importantly, avoid toothbrushes with hard bristles as they damage dentures. Hand soap or mild dishwashing liquid is acceptable to use for cleaning while other types of household cleaners and types of toothpaste may be too abrasive and should be avoided.
It’s extremely important to keep dentures moist. If not, they could lose their proper shape. Every night they should be placed in soaking solution or water. Avoid any metal material as it can tarnish them.
If your denture no longer fits properly, breaks, chips, cracks, or a tooth becomes loose, please contact us immediately. We can make necessary adjustments or repairs, often on the same day. Some complicated repairs may require longer duration. We do our best to work quickly and efficiently.
